Are You Mentally Tough? Part 2

Continued from Part 1

Mentally tough people are able to embrace change. They realise that the fear of change is a major threat to their success and well-being. They anticipate future change and prepare for it. If you always do what you’ve always done you will always get what you always got. Change must take place in order to take advantage of new opportunities.

A willingness to take risks is also necessary. It takes great self-awareness to plot a course between dwelling and remembering. Dwelling too long on mistakes makes you anxious; forgetting about them makes you more likely to repeat them. Mentally tough people do not dwell on mistakes, but neither do they forget them. They are flexible and able to adjust for future success.

Coping with failure requires mental toughness. Edison had more than 1,000 failed attempts at making a commercially viable electric light bulb before he hit on a successful prototype. The road to success is paved with attempts that don’t work. Your mistakes pave the way for you to succeed. If you focus on problems, you create and encourage negative emotions and stress.

If your satisfaction and pleasure come from comparing yourself with others, you are no longer master of your own happiness. Comparing yourself with others is self-limiting. When mentally tough people are satisfied with something they have done, they enjoy the success. They don’t allow the opinions and successes of others to take that satisfaction and joy away from them.

The mentally tough avoid judging others. They know that everyone has something to offer, so they don’t have to take other people down in order to feel good about themselves. Jealousy and resentment suck the life out of you. If you appreciate and celebrate the success of others, both parties benefit.

Holding grudges and unforgiveness from the past can ruin present-day happiness. Hate and anger are well able to destroy your joy in life. The mentally tough realise this, so they don’t need an apology before they forgive someone. Forgiving them does not condone their behaviour, but it does free you from being their victim.

Mentally tough people are relentlessly positive. If you keep your eye on the news regularly, it becomes clear that its one endless cycle of war, violent attacks, fragile economies, failing companies and environmental disasters. The world appears to be heading downwards. Mentally tough people focus on what they can do and put their effort into that end. To quote Travis Bradberry, “Mental toughness is not an innate quality bestowed on a select few. It can be achieved and enjoyed”. As the Bible says, “You can be transformed by the renewal of your mind”.

We should not forget three other factors which affect mental toughness: Physical exercise, caffeine intake and good quality sleep.

Exercise: Vigorous exercise enlivens and invigorates. It also produces endorphin-fuelled positivity. This leads to the increased confidence which is a key to mental toughness.

Caffeine: Too much caffeine can lead to the release of too much adrenaline, resulting in fight-or-flight responses. This replaces rational thinking in favour of fast response to ensure survival. So watch your caffeine intake.

Sleep: The relationship between sleep and mental toughness is difficult to overstate. Self-control, focus and memory are all reduced if you don’t get enough of the right kind of sleep. No amount of caffeine can reverse this. Quality sleep is a top priority.
