Do We Find Honesty in the Modern World?

Honesty is truthfulness, trustworthiness and genuineness. Trust is probably the single most important ingredient for family, friendship or business success. Honesty/integrity lead to trust. C S Lewis defines integrity as “doing the right thing all of the time, even when no one is looking – especially when no one is looking”. A simple check could go something like this: Would I want my son/daughter or someone else I love to see me doing or saying this? If not, then why am I doing/saying it?

If you ask company executives to reveal their “core values”, integrity is always one of the first mentioned. So says, Joel Peterson, chairman of the board of JetBlue Airways & Professor of Management at Stanford University.

Building trust and modelling it for others, whether work colleagues, family or friends, requires openness and honesty. It means honouring your promises to your wife and children, your friends and your work colleagues. If you say you are going to be there, your word should be as good as your presence. Therefore, before you make a commitment to anyone you need to be sure you can honour it. However, you must be careful what you promise and to whom. You have to be able to say, “No”, sometimes. Otherwise, fairly quickly, your life will no longer be your own, because you will have become overcommitted.

We are well advised to try to avoid knee-jerk reactions when responding to unexpected or even shocking situations. For example, persistently disobedient children who constantly push against legitimate parental boundaries, on which you need to remain firm.

Please pay attention to your communication skills. Do not negotiate with your children over something you have already made clear. They are pushing you to move your boundary so that they can get their own way. In the work context, make sure you proof read your written communications before you issue them. Also plan your oral presentations and phone calls beforehand.

Develop your skills at listening rather than thinking about what you are going to say next, whether it’s with your children or your work colleagues. Take care with your responses: impulsive or sugar-coated responses may be seen as condescending or put-offs. Try not to spend time justifying yourself to your wife, kids or colleagues. It’s much better for your reputation if you simply contain, as much as possible, any damage you may have caused. Don’t be afraid to admit it and apologise.

Be careful how you express yourself when talking about sensitive issues such as sex, sexual preference, race, or faith/religion. This applies to both your children and your work context, even though the contexts require you to play different roles.

Don’t do business with people who are dishonest. Don’t make excuses for them. Others pay attention to who you associate with and judge you by the friends you keep. Check your level of honesty by asking yourself the following questions:

Am I willing to risk being wrong?

Am I willing to take responsibility for what has happened?

Am I leading by example, whether at home or at work?

Does my conduct commend my honesty with my wife, my family, my work colleagues?
