Before you ignore this blog on the grounds that you are not a leader in the first place, please note that I am thinking of leadership in a wider sense than a recognised position of authority, like a teacher, supervisor or manager. So you could be: a mother, a father, a grandparent, a blogger or a voluntary worker. Most of us have a sphere of influence that we connect with, often in an informal way. This gives you a context in which you have a voice and an example that you can model for others. Of course you have to be aware of this and want to help to make the world a better place to live in for others – in particular perhaps your own children and grandchildren.
So what habits do I recommend?
Firstly, be ready to share what you know with others. Be careful, however that they want to know about your experience and knowhow. It’s not a good idea to be answering questions people are not asking: You may even become a bore.
Secondly, continue to learn, innovate and grow yourself. This will keep you current, up to date and interesting. Don’t be afraid of new things and make sure you use the Internet, which is a mine of information when used properly. Remember, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.
Third: Getting it wrong is your best opportunity to get it right next time. If you are wrong, learn from it and move on quickly. Thomas Edison, one of the first inventors of the electric light bulb, is reputed to have tried several hundred times before he achieved a reliable filament bulb. The message: Don’t give up or withdraw.
Forth: cleverness, brilliance and real talent is often found where you least expect it. Be on the lookout, those who are very young and inexperienced can come up with the most novel and exciting ideas. If you can recognise such talent and encourage it, you do the person concerned and society at large a valuable service.
Fifth: Don’t limit yourself to your own circle of friends or particular sphere of influence. Listen to and if possible meet others who are different from you and perhaps hold different views. A fresh take on a situation or problem can help you see it from a different perspective. There could be a way of doing things you hadn’t thought of.
Finally, if you encounter a problem in your immediate circle, the solution may not be as straightforward as you think. Look a little deeper and ask others for their take on it. You may encounter some information or implication you had not thought of before; a bit of inspiration or even revelation.
