God, the Father, is confident that those who belong to him will hear and know His Voice. This is affirmed by both Jesus and Isaiah (Jn.10:27; Is.30:21). This means that we are justified in having confidence that we can and will hear God speak to us. This is not intended to be an occasional thing (once or twice per year), but rather a normal, regular happening (weekly or even daily). Understanding some of the reasons God speaks to us and the ways in which he speaks is very important to our identifying that it is Him who is speaking.
One reason God speaks to us is to give us instruction and direction.
Jonah heardGod tell him to go to Nineveh and preach to the people there. He didn’t want to do that, so he set off in the opposite direction, perhaps hoping God would forget about what he had told to him. We may well be afraid that we have not heard God correctly and therefore we do not act on what we hear. But God gave Jonah a second chance to hear (Jon.3:1-2). On this occasion Jonah obeyed and went to Nineveh. We should not be afraid to ask God to speak to us a second or third time, just to confirm what he said in the first instance.
It’s also worth mentioning that we need not be afraid of getting it wrong by misunderstanding what God’s instruction meant. We can experiment to check out whether we have heard him rightly.
A second reason God speaks is to confirm that we are on the right track. Confirmation is an encouragement to keep on going just as we are. Jesus had such confirmation at his baptism (Mark.1:11).
A third reason God speaks is to indicate our destiny.
God spoke to Moses about leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt (Ex.3:10). Moses, who was an outcast at the time, replied, “Who am I to go to Pharaoh on behalf of the Israelites?” (Ex.3:11). God’s reply, “I will be with you.” God was making the unworthy Moses into the right person for the job by undertaking to be right there with him.
Prophetic word from God may refer to our past, but it will always present something in the future that God sees us doing or being. His plan is to get us from where we are now to where he is pointing. This will inevitably involve a process with which we will have to cooperate. In doing so, we will learn more of what God is like and what are his ways of doing things. The process is just as important as the place to which it takes us, because it includes the pleasure of getting to know him better.
