Identify the Time-Wasters in Your Life

They say that time flies when you are enjoying yourself. I can identify with that in some things I engage in regularly. Watching my favourite sport, football, on TV is one; Writing blogs is another more recent example. The trouble is, you can get stuck doing things that are interesting and enjoyable and end up spending copious amounts of time on such things. Then, later, you wonder where the hours and days and weeks have gone.

I am not suggesting that interesting and enjoyable things are a waste of time. Indeed, rest and recreation are a vital need in everyone’s life for their health and well-being. However, since time is precious, like me you may need to regularly examine what you spend your time doing to ensure you are not spending too much time on time-wasters. Allow me to give you some examples:

First, Social Media. Checking notifications on Facebook, surfing the Internet, reading updates on Twitter, scrolling through pictures on Instagram. These are just part of everyday life for most of us, but unless you set yourself time-limits, social media can dominate your day. If you want to be productive and successful it’s vital to get a grip on this and draw some time boundaries.

Second, having a daily plan is an important step in getting a grip on your time. Of course such a plan has to contain a measure of flexibility, because the unexpected often happens. But it should not dominate, unless it’s a real emergency. Each morning (sometimes even the night before) I write down a plan of what I want to do the next day, my “to do list”. Then I prioritise the list: Some of the lower priorities may not get done that day.

Third, productive people don’t waste time on activities that are an emotional drain. If an activity is not going to be a positive addition to your life, you probably should say, “No”, to it. Remember, it’s your personal time (your life) that is in question here! I’m often surprized at how difficult people find it to say “No” (politely of course). We all need boundaries, otherwise we will end up doing what other people want us to do rather than doing what we want to do ourselves.

A fourth time guzzler is worry. It’s a practice we usually learn from childhood by copying adults. Worry is fruitless because it cannot alter a situation. Instead, focus on activities you can actively engage in and produce positive results.

Fifth, to be successful and make progress, don’t dwell on past mistakes. Let mistakes be a learning experience for you, and try not to repeat them. Focus on what you have learned from the experience and determine how you will move forward positively from it. Making mistakes is vital to our growth. How many times does a toddler fall over before they learn to walk?

Sixth, beware of negative people. There is a saying that you are the average of the five people you spend most time with. So, if you want grow and improve keep clear of toxic and complaining people.

Seventh, let the people you admire be an inspiration to you. Don’t compare yourself with those around you. Don’t compete with them. Instead focus on competing with yourself.

Finally, make sure you give your own well-being sufficient priority. This is not selfishness. You most take care of yourself in order to be a success at whatever you do in life. Plan to start your day doing something you enjoy: a workout, journaling or reading, meditation, whatever works for you. Take care of your health: sleep, rest and recreation, relationships. These are all important to your well-being. If you are not in good shape, mentally and physically, you will not be any good to someone else who needs your help.
