Keeping Right Perspective
in Difficult Circumstances

It’s winter and we are in Lockdown, so circumstances for many of us are difficult day-to-day. May I make the following suggestions to help us stay in an up-beat frame of mind?

Try to see the humour, or irony as the case may be, in daily situations that arise. Having a good laugh helps. Our family has a WhatsApp on which humorous situations are often posted. For example, a police officer called the station on his radio: “I have an interesting case here. An old lady shot her husband for stepping on the floor she just moped”. Station reply, “Have you arrested the woman?”. Response, “Not yet, the floor is still wet!”.

It’s always good policy to focus on the good things that happen, however small they may be. For instance, if you get stuck in traffic, you now have the time to listen to your favourite podcast or radio programme.

How we respond to situations is so important, whether it’s in our personal or workplace context. Here is a quote which puts our choice to the test: “Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I respond to it”. We all face challenges and its whether we respond or react that makes the situation better or worse.

Another positive suggestion is: Give more than you take. This applies to time, money or talent. It creates such a good (perhaps even shocked) response from the receiver, to say nothing of the personal inner glow of satisfaction you can enjoy as the giver. For instance, next time you are paying for your provisions at the supermarket give the assistant a tip (make sure it’s a decent one, say, a few pounds).

Build a good reputation by making sure you deliver more than you agree or promise, so that you exceed people’s expectations rather than not meeting them. It always leaves a good feeling behind.

Don’t be a slave to your “to-do list”. Remember the relationships and lives you are part of and don’t neglect them. In short, don’t live to work, work to live.

Favours are stronger currency than money, whether its in a personal or workplace context. Non-financial help/gifts have a greater positive relationship impact than those of a purely financial nature. It demonstrates care about the person, and that you have taken time to think about their needs (like you do with a Christmas present).

Train yourself to actually enjoy the discomfort of change. Clinging to the past, as though it was always better then, is the root cause of many of our problems in business, in relationships and in day-to-day life. By embracing change we allow ourselves new perspectives and we are stretched by accepting challenges. Remember, being stretched may not feel good, but can do us good.

Vitality is so important. We need to stay energised with respect to our physical health and equally our mental health. Exercising our mind by being innovative and ambitious is important for the latter.

Finally, but not least: Do to others what you would like them to do to you. Its what you can give to others rather than what you get from them that makes you a person they like dealing with. It is sometimes called the Golden Rule. A measure of its power is its longevity: It was quoted by Jesus as the second commandment, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself”.
