Life in the Fast Lane
and Relationship with God

In 1967, time management experts reported to the U.S. Senate that they believed the speed of technology, satellites and robotics would present a serious problem to the American workplace in future years.

The Problem? People would have too much time on their hands. They said that, “By 1985 people might have to choose between working 22 and 27 hours per week or retiring at age 38”.

Over 50 years later, we are moving faster than ever. In UK cities and business environments we are always trying to get things done more quickly, and even the general pace of life can be hectic. People in their 30’s and 40’s are expecting their retirement age to be 68 or 70, so that pensions are sufficient for them to live on. It seems that the 1967 forecasters got it wrong!

If we compare the pace of life in Jesus’ lifetime with that of the second decade of the 21st century, there are very few similarities. He was not in a hurry. He never seemed to be rushed, nor overwhelmed by life like we sometimes are. Jesus lived in a different culture and time frame to us, but he also lived at God’s pace: And God is not in a hurry.

Hurry and busyness may be a cultural problem, but it’s also an attitude problem. We live in an instant society and we expect a better standard of living than our forefathers. We expect to be served quickly. However, there is a cost to these demands. If God is still not in a hurry, but we are, then making connection with him is likely to be difficult. Even when we do connect it is likely to be intermittent, because of our consciousness of time and our other priorities. Jesus frequently retreated from the demands of life and spent time alone with his Father. At the start of his ministry he spent almost 6-weeks consulting his Father.

Our relationships with other people are also likely to suffer due to limited time. Our capacity and availability to love others decreases in direct proportion to quality time spent with them (I realise there are other factors too). So, if we lack time, we are likely to contravene the two greatest commandments: Love God and love one another.

The information revolution can leave us in a place where we know a lot about everything. But all of this information does not lead us to know God, in person. Thus, we possess lots of is knowledge, but little wisdom – since our knowledge doesn’t touch our heart or conscience.

Finally, a hurried life style clouds our purpose and dampens our passion. In a busy world purpose comes down to what you do and what you have to show for it. In God’s economy, purpose is about who you are and what you are becoming. Unless we are willing to reduce our pace of living, we will not be able to see the world or other people through God’s lens.
