Managing the Digital Age Revolution

In the opening quarter of the 21st century we have the world at our figure-tips. Our mobiles, i-pods and laptops give us instant access to information from virtually any location on the planet. It’s exciting and scary in almost equal measure. Exciting in that it makes communication so easy and information so easy to obtain. Scary in that we get to know things that disturb us, make usangry and sometimes make us afraid. And, in most instances, we can do nothing directly about whatever stirs us up – except perhaps sign a petition trying to activate change or make a financial contribution to a cause that stirs us.

In recent American survey 84% of respondents said they were angrier today than they were a generation ago. Another poll found that Americans were angrier in 2018 than at any time during the last decade. We seem to have an over-awareness of what is happening in the world, combined with little or no capacity to influence those things that anger, disturb or frighten us. You could say that our Information/Action Ratio is seriously out of balance, since most of us can only act upon what we are in contact with in our own family, locality, workplace or social context. Perhaps this is the main reason for increased anger; frustration that we are almost impotent to make the world a better place in which to live.

So how can we deal with this anomalous situation?

May I make the following suggestions:

Firstly, identify actionable information in our local environment, family, workplace, social context and locality. These need to have priority with respect to our time and attention. This is where we can have a direct influence and a positive input, depending on our capacity and gifting.

Secondly, we need to hold off the temptation to fill our time interacting with the media and the internet. You can go to the gym without listening to a podcast or your latest CD download. You can eat with others, including your family, without scanning social media or messaging on your mobile. You don’t have to fill every waiting moment with something informative or useful. An alternative is to practice being quiet, observing people/nature, your surroundings, in those “in-between moments”. This would have a positive effect on our stress and anger levels.

Finally, as a Christian, I have found that there is a place of rest and calm in our fast-paced 21st century world. There is a vital need to maintain inner peace, in order to remain in charge of our own life. “He that is slow to anger is better than the powerful; he that rules his own spirit that he who rules a city”, says one of the proverbs of Solomon (Prov.16:32). In a world of rant and rave and rush, those who have a Jesus-focus can keep calm and carry on with that which is of immediate importance.
