Small Changes That Make a Big Difference

Happiness, success and contentment depend, in large measure, on: Having constructive thoughts, acting on what you believe is important and enjoying good relationships with others. We have control over each of these areas; so if we need to change in any one of them, it’s within our power to do so. I propose that the following changes have the biggest impact:

The Way We Think

This determines how we feel which, in turn, determines what we do. If your thoughts are filled with self-doubt, negative self-image and self-judgement, your actions will not produce good results nor positive responses from others. You need to reboot your way of thinking, which may not be as easy to do as it is to say. Most of us have habitual thought patterns which we are not aware of. In order to identify these we may need to become more self-aware. Is this thought pattern constructive? Does it help me to move forward? Is it positive? We need to ask ourselves these three questions. Rebooting your internal thoughts can help you become more constructive and positive.

Please note: You may need help from a counsellor or a trusted friend to improve your self-awareness.

Dealing With Our Feelings

It is most important not to allow our feelings to dictate either our thinking nor what we do. This is not to say we must ignore our feelings (remember the first point, above, with respect to self-awareness), but they should be separate from our actions. For example, if someone is difficult to work with, you can acknowledge that, then decide what to do about it separately. This way you can work with them whilst being conscious of the limitations their behaviour has on your joint productiveness and enjoyment. Your actions are separate from your feelings about that person.

Comparing Yourself

Comparing yourself with others is neither useful nor constructive. There is usually someone who is better than you are, whether it’s at work or as a parent. It is vital to have your own measure of success, based on what is important to you. Meaning is a much better measure of your own impact and contribution than comparison, since comparison depends on how good someone else is. Find and focus on the real meaning in your performance.

The Value of Time

Time is your most important asset. Find some minutes at the start of each day to think about how you will spend that day. Prayer, meditation, exercise and some thinking time can have a massive impact on how that day and week pan out. Decide when and where you can create this thinking and panning time. It’s so important to quieten and focus your mind and heart.

Listening

This is probably the most powerful learning tool and relationship builder you have, but it is also the most underused. Ask questions and listen carefully to responses, rather than thinking about what you want to say next. Giving someone your full attention is one of the best compliments you can pay them.

Avoiding Predictability

Keep your self fresh by doing something new frequently. Predictable behaviour becomes habitual. There are of course good habits, but doing some-thing new regularly is a good habit too.

Needing to be Right

Give your point of view. Stick to your values and the causes that matter to you. But remember, you don’t always have to be right and you should not always get your own way. If you do, it will not help you to win friends and influence people. There is no joy in winning a battle but losing the war. There is usually more than one way of doing things. Someone else might have it this time. Make room for them; give them recognition.
