There are many reasons why we feel unable to forgive those people who have hurt or miss-used us. Here are some examples, along with the flaws in the argument for our unforgiveness:
You think that if you forgive them, you will have to trust the person who has hurt or miss-used you. This is not the case. Trust is either earned or granted as a privilege, it’s not a demand placed on you to trust them in the future. Forgiveness is releasing them from what has happened in the past.
You may feel unable to forgive them because of the hurt you still suffer from, as a result of their behaviour. The reality is that forgiveness is an act of will. It is independent of your emotions. Therefore you don’t have to “feel” forgiveness in order to grant it. Remember, feelings are very good servants, but terrible masters.
You may still be in emotional pain from the behaviour of the person who wronged you. Therefore, you can’t forgive them until that pain has gone away; you need time to heal or forget. The reality is that forgiveness is not the absence of pain, but the presence of mercy. Just because you forgive someone it does not mean the pain of the offence will disappear: It might, but it’s not guaranteed.
You think that if you forgive them, you won’t receive justice for the pain their actions have caused you. This kind of thinking is blind to the fact that you also have failed God and hurt other people. Only Jesus has settled this debt.
Finally, you think that your unforgiveness of someone else justifies your behaviour. For example, because your partner is “playing away from home”, therefore you are justified in doing the same thing. In reality, no amount of unforgiveness of someone else will free you from your wrong doing: Two wrongs don’t make a right. Joyce Meyer puts it this way: “Unforgiveness is like drinking deadly poison and thinking the other person is going to die”.
The reality is that unforgiveness brings with it personal torment. It eats away at you on the inside: You are not free to get on with your life. Inner peace will be hard to find whilst you harbour unforgiveness in your heart. Rest and peace in heart are absolutely essential for a healthy current relationship with God. Jesus gave you the power to forgive when he forgave you for what he suffered. Therefore, unforgiveness is not a viable option.
