In my last blog, “Habits which enable you to become a better leader”, I was talking about important leadership qualities for parents and grandparents as well as more recognised leadership roles, like teacher, manager and supervisor. In this blog I want to identify areas of personal discipline which characterise successful people. It includes all of the leadership roles mentioned, as well as areas of influence you may have in your normal weekly activities.
To be a successful person, whatever your personal circumstances, self-mastery in the following areas is vital.
Moods: Our emotions are subject to daily, even hourly mood-swingsdepending on how we feel and our current circumstances. It is therefore very important, to you and those you connect with, to ensure that you live by your commitments and not your feelings. Feelings are important servants, but we cannot allow them to be our masters. If we do, it will harm our reputation and de-value of our influence. If you arrange to do something, even informally (by word of mouth), make sure you honour your word – whether you feel like it or not. People who do the right thing, even when they don’t feel like it, achieve most of what gets done in the world, their family and their area of influence.
Words: Equally important in relation to your reputation and influence is what you say. Our words have a profound effect on others. The way we use our speech can either inspire or bore, encourage or put-down. Praise and encouragement are almost always positive and up-building. Pessimism, cynicism, sarcasm and negativity rarely have any positive effect on people or situations. Neither do tired, fearful, worried, angry, anxious, frustrated or sad people. So watch your words and practice positivity.
Reactions: A lot of good influence can be lost through short temper. How much can you take before you lose your composure and react out of frustration or anger? Self-control in this area takes practice, but it’s a discipline worth learning if you want to keep your relationships open and healthy. When some- one wrongs you, don’t return it tit-for-tat.
Time: If you don’t decide how to spend your time, then someone else will. Have you ever wondered where the time has gone, because it seems to have flashed by so quickly? Time is precious. It’s so important to live in the moment and not miss the daily joys of life, whilst you also handle it’s difficulties and unforeseen circumstances. Having said this, we still need a schedule to determine how, largely speaking, we spend our time. Work, family, rest and recreation, sleep: Time for things that really matter to you.
Health: Priorities are important in our busy modern world. Don’t forget, however, allocate time for self and rest: This is not selfish but essential. Indeed, how we spend our time can affect our health and well-being. Being too busy or not having enough stimulus in your life can burn you out or make you a dissatisfied person, respectively. We need to form good habits in our eating, sleeping and activities. This will keep our energy levels high and help us get through stressful seasons in good shape, both mentally and physically. We need to enjoy our success and achievements. We also need to learn from failures and move on quickly: Don’t dwell too long on the areas of failure or disappointment. Our health depends on us moving on.
Money: To be successful we have to manage our money. Successful people learn to live on less than their monthly income. They invest the difference in savings and giving to causes that matter most to them. A budget determines where you want your money to go. Otherwise you may be left wondering where it went!
Where do you need to develop self-control?
Today’s habits will determine tomorrows success.
Warning: It takes more than will-power to produce lasting self-control. I suggest the more you accept God’s control over your life, the more self-control he will give you.
