Jealousy leads us to try to highlight the weaknesses of others, to reduce their value, to develop a case against them or even incite others to persecute them. If you allow jealousy to dictate your actions, you will find yourself liking a person one day and viewing them as a threat the next. As long as you feel more popular, more powerful or more talented than them, you will promote them. But if that person’s popularity, favour, talent or power eclipses your own, competition (or even war) commences.
Jealousy wears many masks. It sometimes calls itself discernment, scrutinizing the actions of its victim for reasons to discredit him/her. Discernment, combined with jealousy becomes the suspicion. In the case of King Saul, in the Bible, jealousy of David turned a once humble farm boy into a man trying to commit murder (1Sam.18).
So what can we do if we are troubled by jealousy?
Firstly, we need to recognise and admit that we are jealous. We need to stop justifying ourselves by saying how much we admire and appreciate the person we resent. If we don’t do this, our jealousy is likely to grow and become a stronghold in our mind.
Secondly, we must go to war against this jealous spirit and invest in the person we are jealous of. We can then share in their successes.
Thirdly, do not give yourself permission to compare yourselfwith others. Instead, practice thankfulness for them and the talent they possess.
Finally, one person’s promotion or success does not lead to another’s loss or failure. We need to learn how to celebrate the success of others, by having a humble and thankful attitude. If we do this, we will have our own successes in due time.
Honouring the success of others, rather than allowing ourselves to be jealous of them or their gifts, will place us in a position of honour ourselves. It will demonstrate a maturity and thankfulness which will lead to our own success in our own areas of ability and gifting. There can be no profit in being promoted to a position for which we are neither prepared nor suited. In the realm of business management this is referred to as being promoted to our level of incompetence.
