Help and Release from the Demanding Modern World
22%, 1 in 4, of girls in year 10 (14 year old’s) self-harm. This is the national average, according to the Children’s Society. This means that 100,000 British children, aged 14, self-harm. If you are one of them you may be on the NHS waiting list for help, but it will take approximately I year before you get therapy. The government plan is to reduce that to less than 4 weeks by 2022. If you are 14 now, you will be in adult services by then. Therefore this plan will not help you. This information appeared in 15th September 2018 issue of the Times Magazine.
To 14 year old’s who have this problem it may appear that the NHS is crumbling and is likely to fail them. The Times Magazine article claims that self-harm occurs because life has become a “to-do list”: Pass exams, Keep fit, pretend to be happy – because that’s what people expect of a care-free 14 year old.
Self-reliance and living life purely for personal satisfaction and enjoyment sounds good, provided our basic needs are met. But this humanistic approach leaves unaddressed some of those basic needs: The search for meaning and purpose, the need for security and a future, the need to be loved and valued. Most of all it misses the need for relationship and companionship with someone on whom we can rely. All of these needs are met by rest and trust in our Maker and Father. Have we forgotten that we have these needs and that we are unable to meet them by self-reliance and enjoyment?
Jesus invited us into relationship, rest and purpose with His Father. As good as life can be, it takes on a strange emptiness when it lacks an eternal perspective which impacts on our “here and now”.
The words of Jesus are really significant here: “Come to me, all of you who are tired of carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light”.
Perhaps some of us, as parents, need to get back to our own Christian values and upbringing in order to present our needy teenagers with the stability and purpose in life that they are looking for?
