How do you bring up Children to be Mentally Strong?

Children have the capacity to develop mental strength, but as they grow up they need to be taught how to exercise their minds. Here are some examples:

There are times, as children grow up, when they can become victims of their circumstances. Disappointments are part of life: Failure in an exam or being dropped from the football or hockey team can lead to a feeling of rejection and not being good enough. If this kind of thing happens a lot, your child could begin to see him/herself as a victim. But no matter how tough or unjust circumstances seem, please do not subscribe to their self-pity. Instead, encourage them to take positive action. Direct them to things they are good at.

When you say, “No”, to a child’s request be careful not to give in and change your mind, because he or she cries or sulks. It will send an unhealthy message to them and set the scene for them to try to manipulate you on future occasions, by targeting your emotions.

It’s not a good idea to allow your children too much power. Trying to treat them as equals before they are sufficiently mature will hinder their development. It’s important to value their opinion and give them choices, but it must be clear who is in charge, because sometimes they will have to do things they don’t want to do (like tidying their bedroom, or stop playing ball in the house, or stop hitting a sibling).

Self-absorbed, entitled adults are unlikely to have joyful and fulfilling lives. So take care not to make your children the centre of your world, since this will instil in them an undue sense of self-importance. Teach your children that they are important to you, but they are not the most important person in the world. Then they will grow into adults who have empathy for others, and realise they have gifts they can offer them too.

If you want to bring up children who are not ruled by fear, then you need to be a role model for them by facing your own fears. Protecting your children at all costs may spare you a lot of anxiety, but your children are likely to become adults who believe that they are fragile. In short, don’t be overprotective, allow them to experience the world for themselves.

It appears that only about one quarter of children do household chores. I believe that it is importantto get children involved in family/household tasks, because it will help them to become responsible adults who are ready to help. Expect them to take responsibility for what is theirs eg. Sports kit, music or hobby equipment. Doing your child’s chores for them, because they are whinging or taking forever to do them, makes life easier for the present, but it’s not good policy in the medium and longer term. Don’t take the easy way out. Rather stick to long term goals and demonstrate your staying power by personal example.

Your children don’t have to be the best at everything they do, they just need to show improvement, especially in their areas of strength. If you expect perfection, they are likely to give up. But children will try hard to meet your expectations, so long as they are reasonable, and you encourage them in their efforts and progress.

Make sure your priorities reflect your values. Be a good role model and exercise your mental muscles often. Maintain healthy habits, like gratefulness and being mindful of others. Also, demonstrate that you can give up unhealthy habits. This can become a family challenge as you sharpen each other and the family grows stronger as a unit.

Preventing your children from making mistakes will do them no favours. They learn a lot by experiencing the consequences of their mistakes. Teach them that their mistakes are opportunities to become stronger and wiser, and remind them not to forget.

Punishment is meant to inflict suffering. Discipline is to teach children to improve. Don’t make your children afraid of getting into trouble. Instead, use consequences to teach them self-discipline. That way they learn to make better choices.

You can take responsibility for their feelings by: cheering them up when they are sad, entertaining them when they are bored, calming them down when they are upset. A better alternative is teaching them how to manage their moods, because this will help them to become adults who don’t need other people to handle their emotions for them.

Children need first-hand experience at dealing with sadness, anxiety and embarrassment. With your support they gain confidence in themselves to handle the difficulties life throws their way. So don’t shield them from hard times or hurt feelings.

Please don’t be discouraged by all of this. Every child is different. As a parent, we all learn on the hoof. Bringing up children is a learning experience both for you and for them.
