Reaching the Heights - Is the Way We See It the Way It Really Is?

Is the Way We See It the Way It Really Is?

“You’ll have to make your mind up!” That was the instruction given to me by my father as a 15 year-old.

I was leaving school. No comprehensives or GCSE’s in those days. Having attended a County Modern School (the alternative to High School, where GCE’s, 6th Form and “A” Levels were available), what was termed a Craft Apprenticeship or some other non-academic option was available to me. I was fortunate, I had the offer of 2-different craft apprenticeships, with ICI or Head Wrightson’s - a local steel manufacturer, and a technical apprenticeship as a Draughtsman with Ashmore, Benson and Pease. For this latter one full-time Technical College for one year, as a preliminary to obtaining and Ordinary National Certificate, roughly the equivalent of “A” Level, was required. I didn’t fancy the last one, because I wasn’t very good at maths.

Oh, I nearly forgot, I had another option too. I could have gone to work in a local garage as an Apprentice Motor Mechanic. My Dad happened to be Transport Manager there, in charge of a fleet of about 50 Lorries. I would have been on the maintenance and repair end of that operation. I didn’t fancy this one either. The idea of working for my Dad didn’t appeal to me. Having said all this, I was very grateful to be in the position of having so many opportunities to choose from.

In the end I chose ICI, because I liked the sound of the job they offered: Instrument Artificer. Sounds good doesn’t it? They call them Instrument Technicians nowadays. At the time, I had no idea what it was and I had nobody else who knew and could explain to me. Oh, it was also the best paid option, £3 7s 6p per week (pre-decimal coinage). I also liked the idea of working for a company that was producing fertilizer designed to increase crop production – it seemed like a worthy cause to me.

Why am I telling you all of this? Because the reasons on which I based my choice were instinct and gut feeling rather than any logical thought or advice I may have received. There was also a certain amount of idealism involved. Today, I’d probably have been surfing the Internet for company backgrounds and job descriptions etc.

The key thing is this: How I saw things, what I felt about them and what I thought about them determined how I made my decisions. I find this a general principle in life, not just when choosing jobs and careers. The way we live and what is important to us is usually decided by: Vision – how we see things, Attitude – how we feel about them, and Mindset – what we think about them.

What we see is actually determined by what we believe. This of course means we have an inbuilt bias which will depend on a combination of things: personal experience, upbringing, education, parentage (nurture), our DNA (nature), our culture, financial status, geographical location, influences, personal convictions, desires, ambitions, talent, determination. There may be others or there may be fewer, depending on the individual concerned. The point is this: It’s not so much what we see as the way we see it that will affect our emotional state, and therefore our response.

How do we feel about what we see? Our feelings can be very powerful, especially where relationships are concerned. The trouble is that feelings are prone to such fluctuations, highs and lows, that it’s really not good practice to rely upon them. Therefore, keeping a good attitude is important. What do we really live for? Some people eat to live, others live to eat. Some live for family, others for Olympic gold medals. Some live for work, others for leisure. Some live for other people, others for themselves.

Finally, we have mindset, the way we think. The proverb says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (this also applies to a woman). Other sage advice goes something like this, “Do not be pressed into the way other people think, but go with what you believe is right” (my wording). This implies the way we think can be changed, it’s not consigned to be forever the same. For me, I like this quote by Kris Vallotton,“You can’t change your life, but if you change your mind, God will transform your life”. Now if that works, it looks like a good deal.
