Reaching the Heights - What Does it Mean to be Intelligent? Part 1

What Does it Mean to be Intelligent? Part 1

It was once assumed that IQ (Intelligence Quotient) was the primary source of success in our lives. Therefore high IQ was the passport to success. Then it transpired that people with average IQ out-perform those with higher IQ 70% of the time. This was not understood for some time, until Emotional Intelligencearrived on the scene, courtesy of a book by Daniel Goleman. Much research revealed EQ (2) to be the critical factor which sets apart star performers. 90% of top performers have high EQ. EQ, remember, is that “intangible something” in each of us that affects how we manage our behaviour, navigate social complexities andmake personal decisions.

Dr Travis Bradbury (1) has analysed data from more than 1-million people, who have EQ-tested with his company, TalentSmart, to identify 18-Behaviours Indicating High Emotional Intelligence (3). I am going to group these behaviours into 4-categories and then explain briefly the meaning of each behaviour. My aim is to give a clear outline of the main characteristics of Emotional Intelligence.

The 4-categories are: Self-worth, Looking after yourself, Self-awareness and Looking after other people.

I have put them into what I propose as an order of priority, recognising that our own self-worth is of primary importance. We need to value ourselves if we are going to look after ourselves. And we must look after ourselves and be self-aware (know how we come-over to others) if we are going to be successful in looking after others with the care and respect they deserve.

Self-worth is number one. This comes from within. Every human being has an intrinsic worth, which is not derived from what they do (for a living). What you do is not who you are! What people think of you is not the criteria either. Jesus used to put it this way: “The kingdom of God is within you”. You have internal worth. Don’t let anyone take away the joy that is in you as a son or daughter of your Creator. This is the starting point to “looking after yourself”.

Now let’s be practical. Caffeine puts your body and brain into a hyper-aroused state of stress. Your emotions overrun your behaviour. Caffeine’s long half-life ensures that it takes some time to work its way out of your body. Limit your caffeine intake.

Staying practical, sleep is so important. It literally recharges your brain, so that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Your self-control, attention and memory are all reduced when you don’t get enough of the right kind of sleep.

Third practical suggestion: Negative thoughts are dangerous in proportion to the amount of time and importance you allow them. They are, after all, thoughts, not facts of even realities. There is a cycle of negativity which it is easy to slip into. It is essential that this is reversed and replaced with more positive thought patterns. Meditation is important here, but let that meditation on something or someone. I have often used Bible characters, like David, Moses, Joshua and Jesus.

Staying with what is positive, it is a very good practice to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Contemplating what you are grateful for is not simply the right thing to do, it improves your mood, energy level and physical well-being; probably because it reduces the stress hormone, cortisol.

Don’t get caught up in the failure mechanism of perfectionism. Be pleased with what you achieve and the progress you make. By all means set gaols, but make them realistic, measurable and/or achievable.

When dealing with toxic people, keep your feelings under control. Don’t allow anger or frustration to fuel any chaos that arises. Consider the difficult person’s position and look for solutions and common ground. Even if things derail, don’t let him or her bring you down.

The final two things under “looking after yourself” can be difficult. They are clarity of priorities and dealing with change. Having clear priorities means there are times when you will have to say, No!, to yourself or to others. This involves exercising self-control. Saying, No!, to a new commitment honours your existing obligations, allowing you to fulfil them as promised. Research from the University of California shows that the more difficulty you have saying, No!, the more likely you are to suffer stress, burn-out and even depression.

Dealing with change means confronting the fear of change, which is a major threat to success and happiness. Forming a plan of action to deal with coming change is a constructive way of off-setting its threatened stresses.

Having looked briefly at “self-worth” and “looking after yourself”, we can now turn to “self-awareness” and “looking after others”.
