What would you say is your most important relationship? Some might say their spouse, or their partner, or their best friend. Others may say their Creator or their parents or their children. I propose that the most crucial relationship in your life is the one you have with yourself. How you feel about yourself will affect how you treat other people. The way you respond to other people is directly affected by your own state of mind; how your feel about yourself.
How do you feel about yourself right now? Are you inclined to “beat yourself up” because you are overweight or lonely? Do you feel like you have lost out in the race of life; that they are doing better than you; that its evident because of their lifestyle or the amount of money they appear to have? Do you feel inferior, because someone who seems no better than you has a better/more influential job than you do?
The relationship you have with yourself is the one that you live with every day. Identifying this relationship is the most priceless discovery you can make. Most people appear to be totally unaware that a self-to-self relationship even exists!
Do you talk to yourself? My wife, Susan, does - a lot! I frequently have to ask her whether she is talking to me, Bonnie (our dog), or herself. The reason I ask is that I can hear her talking as she walks around the house doing things, but I can’t hear what she is saying. She is not alone in talking to herself, I do it too. David, the famous Israelite king, also did it. he spoke to himself as though he was trying to counsel a friend out of depression: “Why are you so sad? Why are you so troubled? Put your hope in God”.
We all need to discover that there is a way of living that can deliver us from self-loathing and negative thinking about ourselves. Many of us go through life feeling unworthy or not good enough, and it is true that none of us is anywhere near perfect. But remember, how you think and feel about yourself not only affects you personally, it will also influence (either tarnish or improve) all of your communication to others.
Now David, as a believer in his Creator, God, always got around to aligning his thoughts about himself with those of God. And God had chosen David and he thought very highly of him. So when David thought and talked to himself along the same lines as God did, his spirits were raised, his face brightened and he always felt better, regardless of current circumstances. It meant that, to him, what other people thought and said about him was much less important. He got his cue from God himself and that meant he was okay, he would be looked after.
The relationship we have with ourselves is perhaps our most neglected relationship. And it affects our state of mind, how we feel, and how we come-over to others. It is vital to our well-being.
